Installing a voice.
Usually one tap. When it isn't, it's almost always one of the five things below.
- 1Open backseatnav.com on your phone, in Safari or Chrome, with Waze installed.
- 2Tap Install in Waze under the voice you want. Waze opens and asks to add it. Say yes.
- 3Select it. In Waze: Settings → Voice & sound → Waze voice. It's under Custom voices.
Nothing happened, or a Waze web page opened instead of the app
You're probably inside TikTok's, Instagram's or another app's built-in browser. Those often won't hand a link to a different app. Tap the ••• or share menu, choose Open in browser (or Open in Safari), then tap Install again.
I don't have Waze
The Install link takes you to Waze's own page with a download button.
- Android: installing Waze from that page carries the voice through, so it's waiting when Waze first opens.
- iPhone: install Waze, open it once, then come back here and tap Install again.
It's added, but Waze still sounds normal
Adding a voice doesn't switch to it. Go to Settings → Voice & sound → Waze voice and tap the one you want. A blue check marks the active voice.
I'm on a computer
Waze voices live on your phone. On the home page, tap Install on your phone under any voice and scan the QR code with your phone's camera.
It never says street names
That's Waze, not the voice. A custom voice is 43 recorded clips with no text-to-speech at drive time, so "turn left onto Main Street" comes out as "turn left". Every custom voice works this way.
I've got duplicates in my voice list
Waze keeps every voice you've ever added, even older versions. Swipe the extras to delete them.
